De Guadiana Grand Route (GR 15) strekt zich uit over 65 km en is groots in lengte en schoonheid. Het volgt de rivier de Guadiana terwijl deze door de hooglanden en de Barrocal stroomt op weg naar de zee.<\/p>\n

De Guadiana, die langs de zuidoostelijke grens van Portugal met Spanje loopt, wordt sinds ongeveer 800 v. Moren.<\/p>\n

Tegenwoordig bedient de rivier niet langer commerci\u00eble routes, maar de interessante en mooie landschappen en de rijke geschiedenis en het erfgoed van de regio zijn een traktatie voor de bezoekers.<\/p>\n

Onze tour begint in M\u00e9rtola, bekend als het "museumdorp", ooit de hoofdstad van het toen machtige Moorse rijk, en waar de geschiedenis in charmante lagen is gegraveerd.<\/p>\n

Vanaf hier lopen we naar Pomar\u00e3o en Mina de S\u00e3o Domingos, waar de Guadiana<\/a> draait landinwaarts naar het noordwesten. Het werd een drukke haven in de 19e eeuw als gevolg van een Brits bedrijf dat een mijn 15 km naar het noorden had gevestigd. Het erts werd via een spoorlijn van de mijn naar Pomar\u00e3o vervoerd, waar het op schepen werd geladen en de rivier af werd afgevoerd. Wat overblijft van de mijn doet denken aan een maanlandschap dat op geen enkele scifi-filmset zou misstaan.<\/p>\n

Alcoutim is een andere uitvalsbasis van onze tour, een pittoresk dorpje tegenover San Lucar aan de andere kant van de rivier, in Spanje. Hoewel kleiner dan M\u00e9rtola, was het in de tijd van de Fenici\u00ebrs een belangrijke rivierhaven.<\/p>\n

Vanaf hier zullen we mooie natuurwandelingen maken, waaronder de "Blue Dragon River", zoals de Odeleite-dam ook bekend staat vanwege zijn bijzondere vorm.<\/p>\n

Het natuurpark van de Guadiana-vallei en de gevarieerde landschappen langs de rivier bieden een vrij uniek ecosysteem van mediterraan struikgewas, rotspartijen en een achtergrond van kleine landbouwgronden, water en windmolens.<\/p>\n

De natuur is uitbundig en er heerst een gevoel van rust in dit nog ongerepte deel van het gebied, rijk aan erfgoed, geschiedenis en natuurlijke wonderen.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
