Tour Description

Set on the western edge of the Sierra Morena mountains in northern Huelva, the Sierra de Aracena y Picos de Aroche Natural Park offers an extraordinary backdrop for our walking holiday. Here, ancient mountain pathways seamlessly connect deep-rooted Iberian traditions with rich medieval history.

Blessed with a mild climate and lush natural canopy, this region invites travelers to discover an amazingly diverse landscape. Walk beneath immense holm and cork oak groves, through serene Pyrenean oak forests, and follow river trails along the Múrtigas, where dense riverine forests of giant poplar, ash, willow, and alder line your path.

Beyond its scenic footpaths, the region’s mountain meadows have long supported Iberian pig farming, fostering a centuries-old culinary tradition centered in historic villages like Cumbres Mayores and Jabugo.

No journey through Aracena is complete without sampling its world-renowned Denomination of Origin cured ham, an authentic epicurean experience deepened by a visit to the Ham Museum in Aracena. Blending rewarding walks, hilltop fortresses, and unforgettable local flavors, this tour offers an immersive way to experience the timeless soul of the Sierra Morena.

Arrival

DAY 2
Aracena & Liñares
Aracena is the capital of the Huelva region and it gives its name to the mountain range and the Parque Natural, one of the most important protected spaces of the Community, which occupies the whole of the north of the province.

Our walks are adorned with a brilliant display of Mediterranean vegetation, including holm oaks, cork oaks and oaks, and in some areas chestnut trees, which form forests in the more humid areas between Linares and Aracena.

DAY 3
Rio Tinto Mining Park
A day to discover the mining tradition in the province of Huelva. Riotinto was shortlisted in the European Commission’s EDEN programme (European Destinations of Excellence), in recognition of its sustainable tourism proposal.

DAY 4
Almonaster La Real

An Arab castle, Mudéjar and Gothic houses and a mosque form part of the urban hub of Almonaster la Real, which has been declared as a historic and artistic site.

The town is located in the centre of the Sierra de Aracena y los Picos de Aroche Nature Reserve, which is one of the most important protected areas in Andalusia and occupies the entire north of Huelva. Its urban hub extends to the foot of a castle-fortress from the 9th century and the church-mosque of Nuestra Señora de la Concepción, declared a Property of Cultural Interest.

DAY 5
Day off

Free time for independent exploration.

DAY 6
The Hills of Aracena

Dense forest covers most of the park due to the humid climate which has an Atlantic influence. This is the western end of the Sierra de Morena mountain range, close to the Portuguese border. Oak and Chestnut are the main tree species with meadow pastures which are grazed by Ganado Bravo, fighting bulls. Cerdo Iberico, a breed of black pig from Iberia, is raised in the pastures and feeds on the acorns giving it a distinct flavour.

DAY  7
Alajar & Fuente Heridos

Alájar, declared a Historic-Artistic Site, is a charming village of narrow, winding streets that blend harmoniously with the surrounding landscape. Dominated by its distinctive church tower, the village lies at the foot of the Peña de Arias Montano, a site designated as a Place of Cultural Interest.

Fuenteheridos is one of the prettiest white villages in the Sierra de Aracena and Picos de Aroche Natural Park.
